Terms Used in Google PageRank

There are some common terms used in Google Pageank. They are Internal Link, Backlink, Outgoing Link, Outbound Link, Inbound Link and Dangling Link. Let's illustrate how these links use in Google PageRank.

Let's discuss the terms used in Google PageRank one by one. Please refer to the diagram below.

Internal Links
Links from web pages within your web site.

Backlinks
When Page 1 links out to Page 2 internally, then Page 2 has a Backlink from Page 1.

Note:
Backlinks sometimes also called Inlinks. Some people also used Backlinks or Inlinks to refer links from other websites. This may be quite confusing.

Link Back
When Page 1 links out to Page 2 internally, then Page 1 is link back to Page 2.

Outgoing Links
Some people use the term Outgoing Links to indicate links to other web pages within a web site or outside web sites. Therefore we try to avoid using Outgoing Links as a single term in this web site. For links to other web pages within a web site, we will either use Link Back or Internal Outgoing Links. For links to web pages of outside web sites, we will use Outbound links.

When Page 1 links out to Page 2, then Page 1 cast a vote to Page 2.

Internal Links, Back Links

Outbound Links
Outbound Links link to web pages in other web site. As shown in the diagram below, Page 2 of web site 1 has an Outbound Link to Page 1 of web site 2.

Inbound Links
Inbound Links are Links coming from other web sites. As shown in diagram below, Page 2 of web site 1 has an Inbound Link from Page 1 of web site 2. Some people also use the term Incoming Links for this kind of links.

Dangling Link
A link to a web page that has no any outgoing link (i.e. no link back to other page and Outbound Link) is called Dangling Link. As shown in the diagram blow, the link from Page 1 of web site 1 to Page 1 of web site 2 is a Dangling Link.

Note that the following links are also consider as Dangling Links:
- A link to a page that has no any PageRank.
- A link to a page that has not been indexed by Google.

You should noticed that there are many people using a Dangling Page for link exchange. A Dangling Page has no any value in improving PageRank.
