Google PageRank Loss Example -
Poor Internal Linking of Webpages

This example shows how poor internal linking will cause PageRank loss. PageRank loss simply means that the Total PageRank achieved is not equal to the Maximum PageRank available of a website.

Tips:

Maximum PageRank Available = Total Number of Pages x 1

For example: if your web site has 85 pages, the Maximum PageRank Available for your web site is 85. Then you can decide how to allocate the 85 PageRank value to the pages.

Let's get started!

Linking Structures of Web Pages
The linking structure of this kind of web site is shown as the following diagram. Please note that the link from Page 2 to Page 3 is a Dangling Link.

PageRank Loss Example

PageRank Numbers of All Pages at the Beginning:
Same as previous examples, all pages have a PageRank PR 1 at the beginning. Fill in the PageRank numbers of all pages in a table as shown below:

  1
Home 1.00
Page 1 1.00
Page 2 1.00
Page 3 1.00
Total PR:
4.00
PR Loss:
0

Start Calculation PageRanks from Home Page:
Same as the first example, let's start with the home page. Since this is the first calculation, the PR value of all pages will be counted as one.

PageRank Loss Calculation

Fill in the result in the table:

  1 2
Home 1.00 0.58
Page 1 1.00
Page 2 1.00
Page 3 1.00
Total PR:
4.00
PR Loss:
0

Calculate New PageRank Number for Page 1:
As you noticed that Page 1 has only Backlink from Homepage. The calculation is shown as below:

PageRank Loss Calculation

Again, fill in the new PageRank number of Page 1 in the table as shown below:

  1 2
Home 1.00 0.58
Page 1 1.00 1.00
Page 2 1.00
Page 3 1.00
Total PR:
4.00
PR Loss:
0

Calculate New PageRank Number for Page 2:
Page 2 has only a Backlink from Page 1. The PageRank calculation of Page 2 is shown as below:

PageRank Loss Calculation

The results will become:

  1 2
Home 1.00 0.58
Page 1 1.00 1.00
Page 2 1.00 0.58
Page 3 1.00
Total PR:
4.00
PR Loss:
0

Calculate New PageRank Number for Page 3:
Page 3 has only a backlink from Page 2.

Note:
This link is a Dangling Link. Therefore in reality this link will not be considered.

PageRank Loss Calculation

PageRank Results After First Round of Calculation:
After first round of PageRank calculation, the new PageRank numbers of all pages are shown in the following table:

  1 2
Home 1.00 0.58
Page 1 1.00 1.00
Page 2 1.00 0.58
Page 3 1.00 1.00
Total PR:
4.00 3.15
PR Loss:
0 0.85

Repeat doing the Google PageRank Calculation:
Now repeat doing the calculations using the same method as before and you will get the following results:

  1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Home 1.00 0.58 0.58 0.42 0.42 0.37 0.37
